Why Minecraft modern villas look flat, and how to fix it — five design lessons

The villas in the build timelapse series are designed by rules, not by hand. Rules make it very clear what makes a building look flat: change one rule, film again, compare. These are five lessons we confirmed that way, and they work just as well for a modern house you build yourself.
1. Walls should read as three layers
A single flat wall is the quickest way to make a build look amateur. Our first villas had glass and columns all on one face — one layer. Now they are built like this:
- Outer face: a dark column every 4 blocks, with open gaps between.
- One block in: an unbroken ribbon of glass.
- Inside that: carpet floors and furniture, so the glass does not look onto nothing.
The gaps set the glass a block back in shadow, and columns plus the log band between floors frame it. Once we also put dark blocks into the glass every 3 cells as well as columns outside — a dark grid swallowed the wall and the glass shrank to little windows. Columns give rhythm; glass is the empty space.
We pull the glass in rather than push the columns out for a reason. Pushing out also gives three layers, but widens the building by two blocks each side, and the camera has to back off in a vertical frame. Measured, the building's share of the frame dropped from 23% to 20%.
2. Make storeys jut out in turn
With 4-block storeys and every other storey two blocks wider on each side, the wide storey overhangs the one below as a cantilever, and four storeys make a zigzag silhouette. A ring of logs at each floor line makes the glass read as storeys; without a horizontal line you cannot tell how many there are.
3. One slab of railing where it steps back
Stepping each storey back a little (a setback) exposes the roof below as a terrace. A single slab around the edge makes it read as a terrace rather than an unfinished spot. A tall wall would hide the outline again. Also close the ceiling below with deck blocks so the terrace floor does not look holed.
An honest failure: we added setbacks to improve the silhouette, and measured no change at all. Seen from above, each floor hides the terrace below it. Setbacks stayed for the terraces and the narrower footprint; the silhouette was solved another way.
4. Make the outline on the roof
Seen from above, a flat-roofed building's skyline is one line of roof. Every shape with a lively outline had something rising above the roof — a tower's cone, a castle's watchtower. So the villa roofs got two narrow structures:
- Stairwell: 3 × 3 and 4 blocks tall — clearly above the roof railing, or it does not register.
- Pergola: four posts with slabs on every other cell, so sky shows through and it stays light.
The key is not to centre them. A symmetric roof has the same outline from every side; off to one side, the shape changes with the viewing angle.
5. Mix blocks only on broad, flat surfaces
A wide floor in one block looks like a flat slab. So only the top of the deck gets related blocks scattered in — polished andesite in smooth stone, cut sandstone in smooth sandstone. Only the visible top layer is mixed, and walls never are; speckled walls drown the column rhythm and the glass contrast.
Keep four material roles and any colours work
Sky Villas #08 and #10 share nearly the same frame (2,172 and 2,171 blocks) with different materials: warm sandstone and brown terracotta in #08, cool smooth stone and deepslate tiles in #10. Both read as the same building because the roles match.
